Lost River Camps

Is camping along the Russian River - not at a pay site - legal?

I am planning a camping and canoe trip along the Russian River in Sonoma County, CA. I don't want to stay at a public (pay) site but rather would want to camp along the river or on one of the river islands. I know it is public land - but is it legal?

Public Comments

  1. No, it's not. There are a couple of spots on the river that are privately owned where you can do that, but you still have to register and pay.
  2. It's only illegal if you get caught.
