How should I explain the topic of concentration camps to my third-grade students? We are reading a book called "Who was Anne Frank?" and it says how Jews were sent to concentration camps. It doesn't explain further, but I know that my students are going to ask me about them. I feel like third grade is too young to describe exactly what happened there, but I also don't want to lie or give them too much of a sugar-coated version of what happened. What would you say? And remember, some are very sensitive and I don't want to upset them too much (or their parents). Serious answers only please.

What are your thoughts regarding American internment camps in the 1940s? Keep in mind that hindsight is always 20/20, but I've heard that many german POWs were hardly treated like prisoners at all; some living virtually free, while Japanese families were interned in camps and lost all their belongings. Was this based on racism, or just a paranoia about invasion? What are your thoughts?

Why did Hitler create the concentration camps? I understand Hitler hated Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, and etc, but why send them to camps. I have learned that young healthy people were used as slaves, but what about the old weak ones? They had to suffer in camps--why didn't Nazis just shoot them and make their death fast instead of long and torterous? I know this is a harsh subject but please just give me KIND and thought out answers.

Can you tell what did the world do to save them this misery? msblast6 Yes, we live in a cruel world. It did nothing to save the Jews nor the Pals.
